The Constitution permits us to address disagreements peacefully as we strive together for justice, prosperity, and a better future. It permits us to do so, however, only if we, the people of this country, have the strength and commitment to make real the Constitution’s promise.

I am saddened by what we saw today, but I am also confident that Americans can and will rise together to meet the challenges that the Constitution imposes upon us:

to renew our commitment to the rule of law and to peaceful disagreement; to push always for justice, equality, liberty, and the ideals of a free nation; to respect one another; to restore civic trust; and to redress this nation’s failures and build upon its achievements as we endeavor to become a more perfect Union.

I expect that all of us, in the Princeton community and throughout our country, will seek out opportunities and occasions in the days, weeks, and years ahead to come together on behalf of those ideals. We all have a role to play.

The future of our Republic depends on our willingness to defend the values that brought it into being. The time has come for people of every political persuasion to denounce the lies, lawlessness, and violence that have brought our nation to the brink of constitutional crisis.

As members of a university community dedicated to truth, learning, research, debate, and service, we condemn ignorance and hatred, and stand in support of the rule of law and the role of knowledge.

Now more than ever, we must commit ourselves to placing the Constitution and the preservation of our cherished democratic traditions above partisan preference and political advantage.

During this troubling time, I am reminded of the generations of Yale students, staff, faculty, and alumni who have served this nation and our world with courage and fidelity. I am confident that, as they have done for over 300 years, members of the Yale community will continue to bring light and truth to a world in such great need of both.

Columbia’s history spans that of the nation, present at the beginning and now here today. Viewed over this expanse of time, we have witnessed harrowing moments and great triumphs in the life of the nation. Columbia often played civic roles that are now a source of pride.

The University can make an important contribution to this process, helping to lead the nation in the development of an agenda for fulfilling the vital but battered ideals so precious to us and so worthy of our commitment. This we will do. I will be consulting with many of our faculty and community to begin this work and will report back soon.

At this time of division in our nation, it is critically important that our university continues to embrace the pursuit of truth, the power of engagement, and the thoughtful exchange of ideas.

Maintaining the safety and security of our community is a paramount priority. In addition to closely monitoring the situation in Washington, we are in contact with Chicago officials and will update the University community if these events or any related activities might have an impact in Chicago.

Violence in our Nation’s Capital and the Transfer of Federal Power,文章里表示,这种暴力行为是对美国基本制度、民事话语和法律程序的不安破坏。

I am writing today to add my voice to the many educational and civic leaders calling for a rededication to the basic principles of democracy. Right now our system is battered and fragile.

It is up to all of us, at Williams and nationally, to protect and nurture it, and to expand its protections to all.

Swarthmore’s very existence stands as a bulwark against ignorance and the types of seditious conspiracy theories that helped to fuel this insurrection. We educate, we create and disseminate knowledge, and we cultivate the capacity for critical thinking and the ability to distinguish truth from fiction.

No one knows what lies ahead in the days, weeks, and months to come. I believe, however, that through our collective and continued commitment to justice, equity, civility, and empathy, the Swarthmore community can help forge a better and brighter future for the nation and for the world.

We are grateful to the first responders who bravely intervened in an attempt to restore peace. While it is difficult to find hope in moments like this, we must remain steadfast in our belief that Democracy will prevail.

Andover will think together about ways to demand more from our elected leaders and society at large—to remain true to those democratic ideals that undergird the United States.

In the meantime, however, I ask that we allow ourselves some space to focus on the more immediate emotional reactions to these events that many of us may be experiencing, likely exacerbated by already-elevated levels of stress and anxiety from the coronavirus pandemic. For those seeking support or guidance in managing these well-founded and normal reactions to such circumstances, please find a number of resources at the closing of this message. The School remains prepared to assist students, faculty, and staff in need with counseling and other support services.

One of the topics of discussion all fall among school heads was how to maintain civility if some of the worst elements of our country’s political discourse found its way onto campus. I should have known then that our students would show us the way.

Our mission is the education of the whole student and our motto is "Not to Be Served But to Serve." And these two guiding principles are urgently relevant and needed if we are going to graduate men and women who will, wherever they live and whatever they do, contribute to society in generous, ethical, civil, and courageous ways.

Taft has always shaped graduates who have changed and bettered their worlds, and it is hard to imagine a time where the need is greater. I think of the core values that serve as foundation to all we do here: service, honor, respect, scholarship, excellence, resilience, inclusion, love.
